SHU takes nurses on a rewarding journey

| 12/05/2011

Whether in military or civilian life, nursing is a calling that features a unique set of demands and rewards. Registered nurses who want to pursue higher education, therefore, deserve an RN-to-Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program that is equally unique, with an inspired perspective on the special role nurses play in the lives of their patients. That’s why the online RN-to-BSN program at Sacred Heart University combines advanced academics and a distinguished, experienced faculty with a revolutionary new approach to nursing studies called the Human Journey. Study of the Human Journey at SHU is not a single class, or even an individual... Read More...

Is Bible study beneficial?

Randall Bell | 12/05/2011

We are living in a time that is often referred to as the post-modern era. Transportation and communication modalities have shrunken the planet (at least in our minds) and made it possible to create a global community. These days, we rub shoulders regularly with people who have worldviews and cultures quite different from our own. Within this context, there is increased motivation to harmonize perspectives and to recognize that all cultures can contribute beneficially to the common welfare. Given the diverse ways of dealing with issues among the various cultures, it seems almost arrogant to assert truth claims as if we are right and everyone ... Read More...

Receive your degree while serving your country

By Wendy Schweitzer | 12/05/2011

The military might not typically be thought of as having much in common with Benedictine sisters, but they share two key values: community and service. In 1959, the Benedictine Sisters of Annunciation Monastery founded Mary College in Bismarck, N.D., with the mission of serving the people of the region. Accreditation was granted by The Higher Learning Commission, a Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, in 1969 and has been held continuously. Read More...

Teaching mathematics as a language —  What gets lost in the translation?

Thomas Clark | 09/12/2011

The cry is heard all across the nation, and probably around the world. You will hear it in every math classroom, every tutoring session, and every home school class. It generally begins in August or September, continues all through the school year, and frustrates students, parents, and instructors alike. “But what do they want us to do?” “Do we just work them?” “I don’t understand the instructions.” “This stuff is Greek to me!” Read More...

Family support key to student success

Johanna Altland | 06/05/2011

Making the decision to go back to school is a huge commitment, but once you take that step, getting the support of your family is one of the most important things that you can do. Research shows that family support is one of the key factors in the success of a working adult student. Conversely, regardless of a student’s goals and aspirations, they are more likely to drop out of college if they do not receive the necessary support from their family. Read More...

Do two halves really make a whole?
Do two halves really make a whole?

Thomas Clark | 06/05/2011

Such a simple question! But is the answer that obvious? Not when it comes to high school Algebra. And I’m not talking about some new way to add algebraic fractions. I’m referring to the age-old practice of teaching two years of Algebra in high school which, presumably, make up a complete course in Algebra. They may have been called Algebra 1 and 2, or they may have been called Beginning Algebra and Advanced Algebra. In either case, the implication was that each comprised one-half of a complete Algebra course. However, if you look at the table of contents in any “second year Algebra” book, you will find that at least 50 percent of the book is ... Read More...

Homeschoolers: How do you teach physics?

Cindy Bianucci | 05/13/2011

So, the word physics has entered your homeschool conversations as of late, and you’re a bit stumped as to what to do with it? Yes, you could ignore it, but that wouldn’t be in the best interest of your child. Your child is nearing an age where it may be an option, but does he/she need it? And if so, how will you teach it? How could you possibly? Will it consume your time? Read More...

Education in America: Homeschooling on the Rise

Donna Rees | 03/08/2011

The homeschooling movement continues to gain momentum as home-educated students and graduates demonstrate success academically and socially. Boasting an increase of 74% since 1999 and now in its fourth decade, the modern homeschooling movement is gaining followers at an astonishing rate. Homeschool, for the most part an unfamiliar term only thirty years ago when the movement began, has become a household word. U.S. educators from both public and private school arenas are very much aware of the movement and its impact, and today popular media frequently make mention of “homeschoolers,” from characters in CBS’s #1 show, NCIS, to homeschool gra... What about culture?

| 09/20/2010

When it comes to incorporating foreign language studies into the homeschool, families have dozens of great reasons for their choice. For military homeschoolers, some special situations may create an influence on the choice that the average civilian doesn’t encounter. Those of us stationed overseas may choose a target language based on communicating with neighbors or local nationals in off-base situations. The family of a linguist may choose a target language based on what will encourage higher maintenance of the service member’s skill set. Read More...

Toddlers and homeschooling – making it work

| 09/20/2010

While some families are sending their children off on the bus or dropping them off at the preschool or daycare, most homeschooling families are trying to incorporate toddlers and preschoolers into their daily learning activities. This can lead to some interesting and exciting multi-age learning, of course, but it can also lead to exasperation or frustration for parents and school-aged children who are trying to “work around” a little one who’s interested in one thing: getting hands-on! Military Family-Stuhlfire

When her daughter was two years old, Colleen Stuhlfire started to think about her education and decided that she would school her child at home. Her decision was based on conversations with other military families who spoke of the strain on children who often change schools because of multiple redeployments, coupled with curriculums that vary from state to state. Effective home schooling is like good military strategy

Ronald E. Johnson, C.Ph.D. | 02/19/2010

Lt. Colonel Bushue (SAC) taught me a valuable life lesson: identify what you want to do, assess options, make a plan, outline your steps to get there, obtain needed resources, and focus on daily priorities that lead to goal achievement. That is the strategy for most successful military operations. An effective home school program follows a similar prescription. Without a clearly defined home school plan, life can quickly “turn south,” especially with teenagers. Read More...
