Tioga County is home to Pine Creek Gorge otherwise known as Pennsylvania’s Grand Canyon. The Gorge is surrounded by 165,000 acres of the Tioga State Forest making it a truly pristine area to visit. The area abounds with outdoor activities including horseback riding, canoeing, rafting, hiking, biking, cross-country skiing, fishing, hunting, and much more! A jewel of the Gorge is the Pine Creek Rail Trail voted one of the “10 great places to take a bike tour” by USA Today in July 2001. This 62-mile long trail with a 2% grade over its entire length travels through the Gorge starting in Ansonia and ending in Jersey Shore. The trail is a hard-packed gravel surface available to hikers and bikers. And in the winter, this trail is groomed for cross-country skiing. |

Along with the Gorge, Tioga County is home to seven lakes scattered throughout the area. You can fish Hammond Lake to catch a rival to the current state record
crappie that was caught there or set a new record! Not for the faint of heart, ice fishing is a top activity on many of the lakes.
What’s more cozy than the thought of enjoying a snowy winter’s day in the mountains of Pennsylvania? Once lush green forest is now blanketed in a sparkling layer of snow. You will think you found your own private winter wonderland!
You’ll discover cross country skiing along world-renown Pine Creek Rail Trail, snowmobile trails that stretch for hundreds of miles(you’ll need your own snowmobile), or you can break you own snow shoe trail (equipment rentals are available – call the Tioga County Visitors Bureau at 1-888-846-4228). If you haven’t tried winter activities before, a great opportunity to learn is the Annual Winter Fest which is held each year on the Saturday of President’s Day Weekend offering FREE family fun including ice skating, ice fishing, cross country skiing, snow shoeing, and sledding. All equipment is provided, so you can try it all.
Not about blazing new trails in the winter snow? Why not enjoy a hot fire in your B&B or cabin or snuggle in to one of our motels or our historic hotel? Bear Mountain B&B offers many winter packages complete with your own private fireplace and outdoor hot tub. You can pair your stay with a winter activity or just grab the TV remote or hide it as you snuggle in your handmade log bed.
Nothing’s better to generate a little heat than a blues or reggae band. Wellsboro House of Blues presents a winter concert series in an intimate restaurant setting. Couple these concerts with an overnight stay for a hot time in the snow.
As February days begin to lengthen and the nights remain cold, the area slowly slides into the maple sugaring season. Did you know that Tioga County has Pennsylvania’s largest maple producer who’s also one of the top three producers on the east coast? You can visit and watch the operation to transform maple sap to syrup during the annual Potter-Tioga Maple Weekend. Always during the last weekend in March, all the maple producers in Tioga and Potter Counties open their houses to the public to visit, tour, and taste. It’s truly a sweet weekend to visit!
